ETHICAL HACKING NET-185-001N Week 7

I am attending the Fiber Friends Forum by the Internet Freedom for McHenry County group.  I will talk more about what I learned when we are finished.  Our main goal is to try to get fiber to the premises to as many people as possible.  We also want to provide a basic 5Mbps service for free, much as Google Fiber did in Kansas City and several other places.  I was already familiar from research inDecember with this map (https://www.ifmc.co/consortium/mchenry-county-broadband-fiber-network-consortium/) of assets belonging to a Consortium of several agencies within the county that can be used as a backbone.

Some of the things I learned from class this week:  I reviewed information about malware, specifically trojans, rootkits, viruses/viri, and worms.  I reviewed how they are different (a worm can spread by itself, a virus depends on other programs to get into a system, a rootkit is used to retain root or administrative access to a system after access has been gained for later use, and a trojan pretends to be legitimate software to spy on a device user, steal data, or surreptitiously use computer resources).

I researched some malware that was present on Google Play that installed tools that could steal banking data, spy on the user of the device, and act as ransomware.  The malware targeted multiple international banks, including one with a local presence, BMO (Bank of Montreal)which acquired Harris Bank in the recent past.  (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/01/google-play-malware-used-phones-motion-sensors-to-conceal-itself/)

I also reviewed some of the ways malware can conceal itself, such as by encrypting the files that it runs from.  I was also reminded of the importance of scanning flash drives, particularly those from unknown sources, for malware before using files from them, especially on Microsoft Windows systems.
